A twelve-sheet Valencian government workbook: an applicant fills in expense lines per action, cross-sheet formulas total them into a protected summary, and most labels are printed twice, in Catalan and in Spanish. The translation carries one English label where the source had two.

What to Inspect

• + All 87 formulas across 12 worksheets are byte for byte the formulas of the source, in the same cells, including the cross-sheet references into the protected summary.
• + Every one of the 255 merged ranges, the sheet protection and the column widths are unchanged; the styles part and the embedded logo are the original bytes.
• + Cells that held a Catalan and a Spanish version of the same label come back as one English label, so the form still reads as a form rather than as two half-translated columns.
• + The job report: 248 of 248 translated cells passed the number and code checks; the remaining cells came back in the source language rather than as a guess.
• — Sheet-tab names are left in the source language by default, so cross-sheet formulas keep resolving. Open the file in Excel and press F9: the totals recalculate to the same figures.

Standard Contractual Clauses

The annex to the European Commission's Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/914: thirty-three pages of numbered clauses, lettered sub-paragraphs, footnotes and running headers — the shape a contract review has to survive.

What to Inspect

• + All 214 numbered paragraphs of 480 keep their numbering definition, so Clause 8.9(c) is still Clause 8.9(c) in German.
• + The 14 footnotes, the 3 header parts and both sections are present and translated in place; the declared pagination the job was billed by is still declared.
• + The job report: 458 of 458 translated paragraphs passed the checks; the rest came back in English rather than as a guess.
• — The cover page is built from Word document variables (fields), which are not translated, so it stays in English while the body is German. German also runs longer than English and Word reflows, so the translation paginates to more pages than the source.

NASA Earth Science Disasters Deck

A fourteen-slide NASA presentation on strategic communications for the Earth Applied Sciences Disasters Program: full-bleed photographs, layout placeholders and speaker notes.

What to Inspect

• + All 14 slides in their original order, on their original layouts and masters; the 10 pictures are the original bytes.
• + Speaker notes are translated with the deck instead of being left in English for the presenter to find on stage.
• + The job report: 86 of 88 translated text runs passed the checks; the rest came back in English rather than as a guess.
• — The job carried the warning that slide text may overflow: Spanish runs longer than English and the text is written back at its original size, so check the fuller slides. Nothing is shrunk silently.

ENISA Loan Application Guide

A born-digital applicant guide published by ENISA (Spain): multi-column pages, a contents column of internal links, coloured highlight pills and navigation bars on every page. The translation is delivered as a bilingual spread — the original page on the left, the translated page on the right.

What to Inspect

• + Internal links. The source carries 189 link annotations. Every one is present in the output — on the original half and again on the translated half, so the translated contents column still jumps to the right page. Our test suite asserts that no link annotation is dropped.
• + Page geometry. Each of the 25 pages is the original 960 × 540 pt page beside its translation on one 1920 × 540 pt spread, and the translated text sits in the same boxes as the Spanish. Our test suite asserts that the page count is unchanged and that every composed page is exactly twice the source width, original on the left.
• + Numbers. Each translated sentence is compared with its source before it is drawn. A sentence whose numbers, codes or links the model altered is drawn in the original Spanish rather than as a guess. Our test suite asserts that an altered number is never drawn.
• — One thing this bilingual file does not carry: the source's 25 bookmarks. The single-page translated output keeps them, and our test suite asserts that; the side-by-side layout is composed page by page and does not copy the outline yet.

NASA Technical Note, Scanned

The first eight pages of NASA TN D-7109 (1972), a typewritten report on the stalling characteristics of a twin-engine light airplane, as an image-only scan. This is the hard case: OCR on a typescript, with symbols and subscripts, in a fifty-year-old print.

What to Inspect

• + All 8 pages at their original size; the page images are the scan's own pixels, with the translated blocks drawn in place.
• + A bilingual version puts each original page beside its translation, which is the honest way to read a scan whose OCR you want to check.
• + The job report: OCR extracted 128 text blocks and 128 of them passed the checks. The others, and every line the OCR never extracted, stay in English on the page.
• — Scanned pages are read best-effort, and billed in full whatever comes back. A fifty-year-old typescript is the hard case: the recogniser has to read struck type, subscripts and symbols off a degraded page, and on parts of this document it manages and on parts it does not. Anything not read — and any block whose translation fails our number and code checks — stays in English on the page rather than being guessed at. Open the two files side by side and you can see exactly where that happened. A scanned page costs the same either way.

USGS Water Cycle Poster

The U.S. Geological Survey's water-cycle diagram: forty-odd labels over a painted landscape, arrows and gradients — the case where erasing a label has to leave the picture behind it intact.

What to Inspect

• + The same 2150 × 1497 JPEG, same dimensions, same format, with only the labelled regions repainted.
• + The background under each replaced label is rebuilt from the surrounding pixels, so a label over sky, sea or rock does not leave a grey box.
• + The job report: OCR found 41 labels and 39 passed the checks; the others stay in English.
• — Word order inside a multi-line label is decided by OCR line grouping, so a two-line label can read awkwardly ("Volcánico vapor"). Each label is translated as its own segment, without the sentence around it. Reading a picture is best-effort in the same way: a label the recogniser cannot make out stays in the source language, and the image is billed in full either way.
